18世紀のフランスの女流作家スタール夫人は、大銀行家で財務大臣の娘として、またその才気活発な評論を通じて、当代一の才媛と言われた。日本で言えば清少納言だろう。

「男でなくて良かった。なぜなら、女と結婚しなければならないからだ」

と言う軽妙な警句も彼女らしいもので、特に有名だ。

その彼女がある時、「ダビデの像やヴィーナスの彫刻は確かに素晴らしい芸術作品だが、ちょっと慎みがないのではないか？」と質問され、

「慎みがないのは、見る方の目ではないかしら」

と応えている。
