14歳の頃、マリーアントワネットの小説を読んだことがある。
市民がこんなに貧しくしているのに、贅をつくす彼女の姿が滑稽にみえた。

『この人、鈍感すぎる。だから処刑されてもしかたがないわ』

そんな風に中学生の私は思った。


最近、公園を横切ったり、デパートに続く地下道で、ホームレスの方々がうずくまっている横を通り過ぎることがよくある。
他の大勢の人々も、まるでそこに彼等がいることが見えないように通り過ぎていく。

私は、ホームレスの人の前をうつむいて歩く。
そしていつもその本を読み終えた中学生の自分に戻る。

マリーアントワネット王妃もたぶん、同じ感じだったのではないか、と。

今わたしは彼女以上に目の前のこの人達に対して鈍感だと思う。
